‘You were united to your wife by the Lord. In God’s wise plan, when you married, the two of you became one person in his sight. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. Therefore, guard your passions. Keep faith with the wife of your youth’. Mal 2:15-16 LT.

The home is a place of safety, security and love. It is the engine room of society as values are molded from there.

Lots of challenges faced by society today are direct outcomes of dysfunctional homes. When children are traumatized in homes due to broken relationships and other negative exposures, they grow up to become a danger to the plan and purposes of God for their lives and the society. This is why couples must humble themselves and allow the word of God to dwell richly in their hearts.

Marriage is good but involves a life of sacrifice. Both parties to the covenant must be selfless for two to become one. Otherwise, there will be strife, and when there is strife, prayers are hindered and the end couple will live a life of struggle. We must therefore die to the flesh for our marriages to please God and produce Godly seed, which is the primary purpose why God instituted it in the first place (Malachi 2:15). The bible says that “except a corn of wheat should fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone, but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit, John 12:24. It was never the plan of God that any union should break down. Marriage is a covenant, there is only one entry and no exit.

Our identity in Christ is fundamental for success in marriage. Each party must have a clear understanding of who he/she is and what their responsibilities are in the family. The husband must lead spiritually and physically. He should be part of the family and know what is going on in the children’s live, in their education and schools. Most importantly, he must provide substance for the family. As far as God is concerned, any man that cannot fulfil this role has denied the faith (1 Timothy 5:8)

Marriage is a commitment that we must keep no matter what or how we feel. For it work, we must solely depend on God’s word to lead and guide us. Marriages have broken down because many depended of philosophies, traditions, and in some instances some negative cultures that are in conflict with the word of God.

Never forget that there is a hierarchy in God’s kingdom, God, Christ, Man and Woman, any time this hierarchy is broken then the marriage is bound to suffer.

Vision and work are critical for men, there would be no substantial progress when these are lacking. A man must work hard and understand that he is the head of the home.

Men must love their wives as instructed by God and women must submit to their own husbands (Ephesians 5:25-27).  A man will naturally gravitate towards a place there is honor and away from where there is none. It is important to understand the different roles, otherwise crisis will erupt.
