The Bible tells us in 1 Cor. 4:1-2,”This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful”. First of all, we must understand that we are not our own. Christ paid the price to purchase us from destruction and therefore owns us! Since he owns us, it is He who decides what he wants us to be and do.
This passage underlines for us that God expects us to be stewards. So what or who is a steward? He is a guardian, keeper or custodian i.e. one who takes possession of a certain property and keeps safe for, his Master. In other words, God expects us to be faithful as servants of the mysteries of God. The Bible is a closed book to those who do not understand that it is the revealed will of God. It contains mysteries – things that have been hidden from the wise and the prudent BUT are now reveled unto us who are infants – i.e. who take the Word of God as it is, rely on it whole-heartedly AND act upon it.
Of all the mysteries in the Bible, the most dangerous, the most misunderstood and the least used is the “Mystery of Prayer”. In Matt 6:31-33, Jesus said, “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” To seek first his kingdom and his righteousness means to always turn to the source. Who is this source? He is our Father which art in Heaven.
If you listen to prayers all over the world and critically assess them, you will observe that the way we pray in the Church worldwide (Nigeria inclusive), is totally opposite to what Jesus commanded! We tend to pray for the wrong things – mostly material things and commanding death and evil on all our enemies – real or imagined. Jesus is saying to us in Matthew 6 that our heavenly father already knows that we need these things. All he wants from us is to seek first his kingdom and its righteousness. In other words, seeking him first and being totally about his Kingdom and His business. Caring about the things that matter to Him, and doing the things he did. He prayed daily and regularly.” Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” – Mark 1:35. In Matt 14:23, ”After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone”. Jesus understood that he had to separate himself unto the Father in prayer. He understood that without the Father he could do nothing. He understood that he needed the source to have the ability to do the works he did. The secret in unraveling the mysteries of the Kingdom in prayer is by following the example of our teacher – Jesus. Only then will the Holy Spirit be able to show us and tell us things in advance. WE can govern the whole world if we practice this simple principle – Pray Without Ceasing – 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ( NKJV) Pray Continually – NIV.
As we begin to unravel the mystery of prayer, why don’t you join us and be part of this exciting voyage of discovering the Father’s will and bringing it to bear on this earth.
